Diary of James Franklin Aldrich, 1876-1879.

Aldrich kept this diary while on a trip, with Colonel Francis Trowbridge Sherman, from Chicago to San Francisco in 1876. They traveled on horseback through Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona visiting various towns, ranches, and mines. Aldrich specifically describes his experiences in Las Animas, Colorado; Albuquerque, Fort Craig, Mesilla, and Silver City, New Mexico; and Fort Grant, Arizona. After Arizona, Aldrich briefly traveled to San Diego, Los Angeles, and San Francisco before returning to Chicago. Also included are Aldrich's expense accounts for 1877-1879.

Sherman served briefly as an officer in two other regiments before becoming colonel of the 88th Illinois Infantry. He was later brevetted brigadier general. James Franklin Aldrich, businessman and Illinois congressman, was the son of Congressman William Aldrich. James Franklin Aldrich was born in Two Rivers, Wisconsin in 1853. The family moved to Chicago in April 1861. In 1887 he served as the president of the Cook County Board of Commissioners. Aldrich was elected to Congress in 1893 and in 1897 he was appointed consul general at Havana, Cuba. He died in Chicago in 1933. From the description of Diary of James Franklin Aldrich, 1876-1879...
